Description
Rare E.P. Cranch hand thrown, Dull Finish, mug with a funeral scene from the Mournful Ballad of Isaac Abbott, an original air documented by Cranch from memory after hearing it as a young man many years before. Robert Clarke & Co, of Cincinnati published a volume entitled "The Mournful Ballad of Isaac Abbott" and E.P. Cranch drew fourteen illustrations for the book, "a relic of the simple country life of New England." Cranch had stated he heard the ballad "more than 50 years earlier," being sung by Noah Webster. Painted initials by Cranch appear under the handle but they are not decipherable. Impressed Rookwood in block letters along with the date, shape number 260 and S for Smear glaze (Dull Finish). Incised "Isaac Abbott 22 EPC" also on the bottom. Height 6 inches. There is a tight 1 inch line at the rim near the handle.
