Description
Donated By: Donick Cary, Emmy-Award winning writer/producer (Letterman /Simpsons / Parks and Recreation /Silicon Valley)
Pre-Columbian, Mayan Territories, Guatemala, Maya, ca. 550 to 900 CE. An earth-tone terracotta vessel, in hues of beige and orange, with a flat base, smooth and rounded sides, a thin lip with a band of red paint added along the interior rim, and a deep bowl cavity. Two playful monkeys adorn both sides, in brown and crimson pigment, and sport large curled tails, wide legs, large outstretched arms, and petite hairy heads. Monkey symbolism abounded in ancient Mesoamerica, and there is reason to believe from Mayan creation myths that they saw monkeys in an evolutionary sense as part of the human family tree - but "failed" as humans. The Mayan people links such simians with writing, artists, and sexuality. Size: 5.25" W x 2.875" H (13.3 cm x 7.3 cm)
Provenance: private D. C. collection, California, USA; D. C. is an Emmy Award winning Hollywood writer and Executive Producer, collected before 2000
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
