Pre-Columbian, Maya, Ulua Valley, Honduras, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A convex-based bowl featuring multiple important symbols of Mayan belief and power. Around the exterior is a repeated image of a monkey, long-limbed and drawn with sure, thin strokes of black pigment. Four species of monkeys lived in the Maya region in pre-Columbian times: two howler monkeys, the spider monkey, and the capuchin. These animals fascinated the Maya and are common subjects of their artwork, often associated with the god Kukulkan. In the interior are repeated heads of the god itself (Quetzalcoatl in Nahuatl, sometimes called Gukumatz in parts of the Maya world). Each has a fierce face with a long snout and horn-like projections from its forehead surrounded by a spray of feathers. In tondo is a cross-hatched pattern. Cross hatching is associated with the glyph for "planting", tz'ap, but may also indicate a net, perhaps for fishing or hunting. Size: 6.1" W x 2.25" H (15.5 cm x 5.7 cm)

The Ulua Valley is sometimes referred to as the Mesoamerican Frontier, the place where the lowlands of the Maya met the lower part of Central America and its different cultures. They are famous for producing marble and polychrome ceramic cylinders that were traded far and wide.

After a rash of teen suicides on the island, Donick thought about how he and his friends got through their teen years. Music.
