Pre-Columbian, Mayan Territories, Guatemala, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A handbuilt brownware cylinder, molded and incised with an entertaining depiction of an energetic monkey presenting a dynamic pose with arms and long tail raised up above his head which is severely turned backwards. Note how the fur of his coat stands on end and his penis is erect - clearly this primate is quite aroused! Monkeys have always fascinated humankind, with their zany antics that seem to mirror and at times parody humans. Understanding simian creatures as mimics of human culture, most ancients of the Americas regarded the monkey as a mediary between man and the supernatural. Size: 4.25" in diameter x 5.25" H (10.8 cm x 13.3 cm)
