Pre-Columbian, Honduras, Ulua Valley, Maya, ca. 600 to 900 CE. A lovely polychrome terracotta bowl, decorated with stylized, geometric textile inspired motifs in hues of red and dark brown on tan background. Maya ceramics were used for commemoration as well as plethora of daily utilitarian activities such as the storage of food and beverages. The Maya were meticulous with their techniques, beginning with the selection of proper clay and temper (stengthening elements such as rock pieces, ash, and sand), a vessel such as this would have been hand built using the coiling method as the potter's wheel was not used by the Mayans. The coil method involved the formation of clay into long coiled pieces that were wound into a vessel. The coils were then smoothed together to create walls. Next, clay slips were created to decorate the potteries in beautiful painted designs and colors. This is a lovely and finely made example! Size: 4-5/8" (11.7 cm) x 3-3/8" (8.6 cm).
