Description
Cream colored canvas golfing shag bag with "Jack Kennedy" emblazoned in dark brown up near the zipper. Measures 12 x 11'' with a zipper closure and two short handles. The canvas of the bag is stiffened by age and has dirt and dark water damage spots, however the sturdy bag is completely intact with no holes or wearing in the fabric. Also included are three of Kennedy's golf balls from inside the bag, Spaulding brand, slightly darkened and cracked by age.
On January 15, 1942, Jack Kennedy, an Ensign in the US Naval Reserve, was assigned to the District Security Office of the 6th Naval District Headquarters in Charleston, South Carolina. While there he was delighted to discover that the Lieutenant that he was reporting to, Lt. Elijah N. Jones, also loved golf. For the six months he was in Charleston Kennedy used this golfing shag bag to carry his golf balls. Eventually, Kennedy was transferred to an active combat zone, per his desire, and Lt. Elijah Jones was instrumental in securing him his position wuth the patrol torpedo boat service. Kennedy's later rescue of the men aboard his PT 109 would make him a war hero. When he left Charleston, he took his golf clubs with him, but left his golf ball bag and the balls inside to Lt. Jones.
Kennedy was an excellent golf player with a handicap in the single digits. He loved the game and played golf throughout his life. His bag and golf balls are a link to one of the President's greatest personal passions.
