**First Time At Auction**

Latin America, Mexico, ca. 1890 CE. A lovely ex-voto depicting a woman dressed in black, kneeling in prayer to Nino Dios Salvador - Child Jesus (also known as the Holy Child or Divine Infant) the Savior - sitting in a picturesque landscape within a celestial cloud - giving the benediction with one hand and holding a communion chalice in the other. The text below generally translates, "Manuela Morales suffered a terrible affliction, but prayed to Child Jesus the Savior. She was cured of this affliction and because of this she gives thanks with this retablo. July of 1890" Size: 10.125" L x 7" W (25.7 cm x 17.8 cm)

Ex-votos are little story paintings that tell us so much about the values of Mexican peoples and their visual culture. These votive paintings were hung in a church or placed adjacent to a santo in order to celebrate and give thanks for the recovery of the donor from an illness or dangerous situation. In essence, ex-votos represent the spiritual or physical gains received by the donor. These paintings include hand painted passages that relate the details of the cure or the rescue. Typically, however, this commentary is replete with regional dialect and somewhat tricky to translate. Nevertheless, familiarity with the Spanish language allows one to understand the gist of these wonderful narrative paintings.
