Mothergod of Tichvin, North Russia, 17th century, tempera on wooden board, size 30 x 27 cm. This is one of the most highly venerated Icons of Russia. The Theotokos of Tikhvin is a miracle-working icon of the Mother of God, which, according to a legend, was painted by Evangelist Luke. It is considered that initially it was in Constantinople, and from there it miraculously moved to the banks of river Tikhvinka in 1383, just before the city was taken by Turks. Later, on the place of miraculous apparition was built a monastery, and consequently, was born the town of Tikhvin. It belongs to an iconographic type Hodegetria (Greek - "who shows the way"), and its characteristic feature is the communication of The Holy Virgin with Infant Christ, and their position, - they are turned to each other. The most important difference from the classical Hodegetria Icon is that the legs of Christ are crossed, while the sole of his foot is turned to the viewer. This can be interpreted as a reference to Genesis 3,15: “And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.” Following this line of reasoning, by showing his heel, Christ affirms both his humanity and his divinity. The uncovered heel thus forebodes his suffering as well as his victory over death. Authentic icon. The authenticity of every icon is guaranteed.
