Description
Mothergod of Tichvin, Russia, 19th century, tempera on wooden board, size 26 x 23 cm. This is one of the most highly venerated Icons of Russia. The Theotokos of Tikhvin is a miracle-working icon of the Mother of God, which, according to a legend, was painted by Evangelist Luke. It is considered that initially it was in Constantinople, and from there it miraculously moved to the banks of river Tikhvinka in 1383, just before the city was taken by Turks. Later, on the place of miraculous apparition was built a monastery, and consequently, was born the town of Tikhvin. It belongs to an iconographic type Hodegetria (Greek - "who shows the way"), and its characteristic feature is the communication of The Holy Virgin with Infant Christ, and their position, - they are turned to each other.
