The Flag of South Vietnam that flew over the Defense Attach_ Office before the fall of Saigon in April of 1975. Recovered by Captain Hirschy before he was evacuated in Operation Frequent Wind, this flag consists of a yellow field and three horizontal red stripes. It measures 34 x 49."

Shortly after he was selected for Captain in 1973, Hank Hirschy was assigned to the Defense Attache's Office as Chief of the Vietnamese Navy Supply Support Branch, a job which he held when the North Vietnamese overran Saigon. He was the last U.S.Navy Supply Corps Officer evacuated when Saigon fell on April 29, 1975.

Operation Frequent Wind was the final phase in the evacuation of American civilians and "at-risk" Vietnamese from Saigon, South Vietnam prior to the takeover of the city by the North Vietnamese Army in the Fall of Saigon. It was carried out on 29„30 April 1975, during the last days of the Vietnam War. More than 7,000 people were evacuated by helicopter from various points in Saigon. Although the South Vietnamese state ceased to exist in 1975, today the South Vietnamese flag still finds use among private citizens in other countries.

These items come directly from the Hirschy family. Lieutenant Hirschy was Supply and Logistics Officer for the Military Aides to the President and Officer-in-Charge of the Navy Mess in the White House during both the Kennedy and Johnson administrations. His duties also included taking care of the President’s needs on overseas trips, aboard the presidential yachts and at Camp David. Lt. Hirschy served in the White House from May 1, 1961 through May 31, 1965.
