Description
Indonesia, Sumatra, Karo Batak, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. An exquisite vessel, the lower section comprised of basketry woven over a piriform shaped gourd, with a figural stopper depicting a rider supported by six petite figures below. A fabulous example, exhibited at Oakland Univerisity's Meadow Brook Art Gallery and published in the show's accompanying catalogue (see details and published description below). Size: 3.875" W x 10.125" H (9.8 cm x 25.7 cm)
This piece was published in "Art of the Indonesian Archipelago from the collection of Paul and Diane Haig" - a catalogue accompanying the exhibition of the same title at Oakland University's Meadow Brook Art Gallery (February 26 - April 9, 1995) - page 20, figure 24. The text reads, "Medicine container with basketry over gourd. The stopper, a modern carving of a rider supported by multiple small figures at the base, is a good example of the influence of tourists/collectors on Indonesian art as it is carved more elaborately to be more appealing and therefore more saleable."
