Description
Partially printed military pay order, approx. 7.25 x 7 in., from the Committee of the Pay Table Office in Connecticut, which was responsible for handling military finances during the Revolutionary War, issued to an identified African American soldier. December 17, 1782. Receipt authorizes "Payment of Thirteen pounds three Shillings & two pence" to Abel Scipio for his service in the Continental Army in 1781. Signed by Committee member Finn Wadsworth, with verso signature of Elijah Flower in receipt of payment for the soldier.
Abel Scipio is listed in David Oliver White's book Connecticut's Black Soldiers, 1775-1783, as serving in the Farmington, CT, regiment from 1771-1781.
Condition
Light soiling. Minor losses along left edge line and tearing along folds.
