Description

CALDER ALEXANDER: (1898-1976) American Sculptor, famous as the originator of the delicately balanced moving sculptures composed of suspended shapes which move in response to touch or air currents, known as mobiles. An excellent, illustrated A.L.S., Sandy Calder, two pages, 4to, Roxbury, Connecticut, 26th July 1954, to [Christian Zervos] 'Cher Taki', in French. Calder informs his correspondent 'I know that I left the mobile there, at Cahiers d'Art, (hanging) from the ceiling' and continues 'I still have to exhibit at Maeght's (sculptures, ''mobiles'' etc.) in November '54, and if you would want to give an article about me at about that time in Cahiers d'Art, go ahead'. The sculptor further adds 'Maybe Henri Pichette could write the article, he thought already of writing about me (as you might know)' and reflects 'Maybe I am too open, or direct - but that's simply my idea'. At the head of the first page, to the upper right corner alongside his address, Calder has drawn two stars, one in black crayon and the other in blue, the former of which might be interpreted as a shooting star as the sculptor has added a rainbow tail of red, orange and yellow crayon lines. Calder's attractive letter is penned in a typically large, bold hand, in black fountain pen ink and is particularly desirable for its references to mobiles, as well as being enhanced by the original illustration. VG Christian Zervos (1889-1970) Greek-French Art Historian, Critic, Collector, Writer and Publisher who founded the magazine Chaiers d'Art which ran from 1926-60.
