Description
Jack Kerouac's Personally Owned & Used Vintage Fountain Pen, Retrieved from his Last Home
A vintage fountain pen personally owned and used by Jack Kerouac (1922-1969), the famous mid-century American writer who brought us "On The Road" (1957). Provenance: The lot will be accompanied by an estate certification signed by John Shen-Sampas, executor of the Kerouac Estate by descent. John Shen-Sampas is the son of John Sampas, who was the brother-in-law of Jack Kerouac, and the brother of Stella Kerouac, Jack's wife.
The pen barrel of metallic flecked light green marbled plastic unscrews into three separate parts
removing the bottom of the barrel allows access to the reservoir. The nib is engraved "Silver Palladium Alloy U.S." Kerouac's fountain pen is not associated with any maker's name (this was probably once engraved along the cap clip, which is now missing.) Yet, pen makers such as Wearever and Esterbrook used the silver palladium nib and had marbled plastic barrels like this one. Identifying the maker beyond a reasonable doubt should prove an exciting task for a vintage fountain pen collector! Besides the missing cap top and clip, near fine. Measures 4.875" long.
Jack Kerouac famously typed out his manuscript of "On the Road" on a 120-foot-long strip of tracing paper sheets taped together. But he also frequently wrote longhand in spiral-bound notebooks filled with everything from journal entries to meditations on Buddhism. What did he write using this pen?
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
