Item Details
Description
Central Asia, Tibet, ca. 19th century CE. A ceremonial iron knife with a curved blade terminating in a hook on one end whose form is reminiscent of an abstract bird. The handle is cast on, made of bronze, in the form of a mythical bird's head topped by a dorje. The dorje, an instantly recognizable symbol of Tibetan Buddhism, represents the moment of Enlightenment. This type of knife is known as a Kartika, and it is designed to be used for ritual flaying in Tantric ceremonies. The form is derived from the traditional Indian butcher's knife. Size: 5.25" W x 5.1" H (13.3 cm x 13 cm); 5.5" H (14 cm) on included custom stand.
