Central Asia, Bhutan / Tibet, ca. 19th century CE. A magnificent sword that commanded authority - the silver-gold hilt pommel features open work of Himalayan scrolling motifs and honeycomb / armor pattern and striated patterns run the length of the single edge iron blade due to the forging process. Braided copper-silver wires are coiled around the hilt as the grip, just above a brass guard. The matching scabbard is made from wood covered in lacquered leather, with a brass chape and a leather cord for wearing on a belt. Such swords were made for nobility and senior officials to demonstrate their rank and are still worn today by some officials as part of parade and ceremonial garb. Size in sheath: 31" L x 2" W (78.7 cm x 5.1 cm); blade: 24" L x 1.25" W (61 cm x 3.2 cm); silver quality: 35% to 60%; gold quality: 36% (equivalent to 8K+)

Minor nicks and patina to blade. Pommel is slightly loose but attached. Areas of green patina oxidation on bras and metal areas. Perforation to brass chape tip on sheath. Abrasions to wear to lacquered leather, loss to half of leather strap on sheath. Overall very good condition.
