Item Details
Description
West Africa, Nigeria, Mumuye people, ca. 1925 CE. A tall, hand-carved wood figure in the form of a standing, seemingly-nude woman. She has incredibly long arms and stands with her hands resting on her upper thighs, slightly hunched. Her face is diamond-shaped, with a raised coiffure that is set far back from her forehead. The Mumuye artistic style is long, narrow, and pole-like, and they create figures known as iagalagana who represent spirits who will give instruction to new initiates of their secret society. Their abstraction reflects their role as outside the human world. Comes with custom stand. Size: 4.55" W x 20" H (11.6 cm x 50.8 cm); height on stand: 20.75" (52.7 cm)

Provenance: Adeon Gallery, Chicago, Illinois, USA, Nick Poolos collection, acquired before 1975
