Extremely Rare Jalisco Pottery Flute - Female Figure
Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A fantastical ceramic whistle in the form of a standing female figure. She is sculpted to be nude aside from a headdress, depicted without jewelry (a rarity in West Mexican human portrayals), and has extensive cicatrices on her shoulders. The remains of black paint are on her buttocks, the back of her arms, and the back of her feet - perhaps indicating tattooing rather than clothing. The back of her head and neck may also have black. Tattooing on similar figures has been taken as signs of status, as have cicatrices, indicating that this probably depicts an elite woman. The shape of her head - elongated and almost rectangular - may be evidence for skull shaping, practiced in youth, and also done as a social signifier, with different head shapes proposed for different groups within the region. Size: 5.7" W x 7.6" H (14.5 cm x 19.3 cm)

The most unusual and startling element of this figure is that her body functions as a flute, with two rows of three fingerholes, one on each side of the front of her body, and a mouthpiece at the neck.

Ceramic figures like this one are some of the only remains that we have today of a sophisticated and unique culture in West Mexico - they left no above-ground monuments or sculptures, at least that we know of, which is in strong contrast to developments elsewhere in ancient Mesoamerica. Instead, their tombs were their lasting works of art: skeletons arrayed radially with their feet positioned inward, and terracotta offerings, like this figural flute, placed alongside the walls facing inward, near the skulls.
