Description
A carved wooden ceremonial vessel depicting a Mother with her child bundled to her back. The mother is shown holding the bowl, which conveys an act of devotion and symbolizes prayer. Such vessels are known by the Yoruba peoples as (agree Ifa), and this would have served as a receptacle for the sixteen sacred palm nuts (ikin). Through this medium, Ifa priests communicated with the god of fate, Orunmila, in order to obtain insights into an individual’s destiny. Please note the deep well handled surface patina suggesting many years of field use. Measures 9 x 4.5 inches (10 inches on custom wooden base.)
