Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Peru, Chancay culture, ca. 1200 to 1400 CE. A pair of textile fragments, preserved by Peru's high altitude and dry environment. The first and largest, sewn onto a modern yellow textile, has been woven with repeated abstract patterns that may be zoomorphic. The second has well done, repeated bird motifs within stepped-pyramid style diamond-shaped borders. The birds are multi-colored, with triangular wings and tail feathers and trapezoidal heads turned so that one eye is visible to the viewer. The iconography on textiles like these had deep meaning to the people of ancient Peru, and they often adorned the mummified dead. Size of largest: 18.8" W x 12" H (47.8 cm x 30.5 cm)
