Description

Pre-Columbian, Central Coast of Peru, Chancay, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. A beautiful textile fragment made from brightly dyed camelid (alpaca or llama) wool in hues of ochre yellow, red, mulberry purple, brown, dark blue-black, and white. The register of stepped motifs are not only fascinating interlocking geometric shapes, but upon further inspection they are also stylized animals in profile with a singular eye and nostril. This textile is mounted on a paper backing. Size: 14.5" L x 4.5" W (36.8 cm x 11.4 cm)

Provenance: private Plano, Texas, USA collection, inherited from father in the 1990s

Fragment as shown, tearing, and fraying to fibers along peripheries and some unraveling to these areas. Areas of staining, but fibers are still bold and vibrant. Upper yellow edge and central weaving is tight and intact. Mounted on a paper backing.
