Description
New World, USA, ca. 19th century CE. A pair of ambrotypes, examples of one of the first commercially successful photograph process (ca. 1850s), one set into a brass frame, the other into a small, decorated wooden box with velvet lining. Both depict horses pulling carts. Ambrotypes, photographs taken on specially-coated glass surfaces by exposing them while wet with a silver nitrate solution, gave ordinary people some of their first opportunities to see themselves through the art of photography. Size of largest in frame: 5.6" W x 4.25" H (14.2 cm x 10.8 cm)

Condition
One has losses in an upper corner, with some scratching to the upper corner as well. The other has some small light artifacts on its surface. Both cases shown signs of patina and wear.
