Native American, New Mexico, Acoma, ca. mid 20th century CE. The Acoma potters are known for their endearing owl figurines. In the 1880s, with the railroads connecting East to West in the United States, the Acoma began creating more petite pieces ideal for travelers. This skillfully hand built owl with applied wings, tailfeathers, and ears as well as a full-of-personality long-beaked visage is decorated with beige and black details over a traditional white slip. "ACOMA N. Mex" is painted on the bottom. Paired with this piece is a miniature wedding basket with two bird heads emerging from opposite ends of the rim and a braided handle. The white body is beautifully decorated with stylized geometric motifs in russet red and chocolate brown. 'ACOMA' is painted on the base. A lovely pair in the quintessential Acoma manner - hand-coiled, with hand-mixed clay and custom slip in traditional hues, so skillfully painted with impressively accurate lines and stylized geometric patterns!
