Archaic Boeotian Greek Painted Terracotta Horse & Rider
Item Details
Description
Central Greece, Boeotia (latinized to Beotia), Archaic Period, ca. 575 to 550 BCE. A hand-modeled, earthenware horse and rider - the rider astride the horse's back and clutching its long neck - with black-painted details for the horse's mane, eyes, and muzzle, decorative bands along the body and legs, and traces of black details on the rider as well, dotted eyes, and striped arms. A fabulous example that demonstrates the Boeotian's admiration for Equidae species; this petite figure prompts visions of ancient stallions. Size: 4.625" L x 5.125" H (11.7 cm x 13 cm)

Sculptors created terracotta figurines throughout Greece; however, they were particularly popular in areas like Boeotia, where this example was made. Apparently, horses, with or without riders, like this one were favorite subjects for Boeotians. Such figurines were commonly left as burial votive offerings in graves. According to scholars, horses symbolized wealth for the Greeks of this period; hence, these terracotta horses were most likely left to represent the deceased's high status.

A similar example, though in somewhat better condition, sold at Christies for $6,250 - Sale 2709, June 6, 2013, Lot 539, Christie's New York, Rockefeller Center. See http://www.christies.com/lotfinder/Lot/a-boeotian-terracotta-horse-and-rider-archaic-5684689-details.aspx
