Description
Ancient Greece, Boeotia, ca. 3rd century BCE. A wonderful example of a Greek Tanagra terracotta figure, elegantly wrapped in a thin himation and standing in a lovely contraposto pose shifting her weight upon her left hip with her right hand to hip and her left hand gripping the flowing draperies. Sculptors of Tanagra figurines were known to vary the direction of the head and the positioning of the arms. So a single figure type might have several subtly different poses. Here, the lady's wreath-dressed head is tipped gently toward her right. While in the previous fifth and fourth centuries, terracotta figurines were created for religious purposes or as theatre souvenirs, Tanagra statuettes focused on the realm of mortal women and children, and sometimes young men or characters that originated in the New Comedy of Menander. This female figurine dressed in such refinery was clearly intended to be the picture of high fashion! Like most Tanagra figurines, this example was made from a two part mold, one for the front and one for the back, the front section presenting fine details. A lovely example with a wood block stand. Size: 2" W x 6.75" H (5.1 cm x 17.1 cm); 8.5" H (21.6 cm) with stand.
