Description
Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Nazca culture, probably Phases 2 through 4, ca. 1 to 450 CE. A pretty, wide-mouthed bowl with a rounded base and a slightly flared, unpronounced rim. Around the exterior is a ring of repeated lizards, viewed as if from above, with their heads oriented towards the top of the bowl; their thick tails extend below their bodies and reach almost to the base. The lizards are black-limbed, with black-outlined bodies that are colored in with bright red and yellow pigments. They are on a creamy white background, with a black band around the rim. The interior is painted a deep burnt umber. Animals are rarely depicted in Nazca art of this time period, but lizards are found in small numbers alongside foxes, felines, snakes, and a few others, suggesting that the Nazca were keenly aware of the natural world and had closely observed it. Size: 8" W x 2.95" H (20.3 cm x 7.5 cm)
