Description
FITZROY ROBERT: (1805-1865) English Royal Navy Officer and scientist, famed as the captain of HMS Beagle during Charles Darwin's famous voyage. A.L.S., Robert FitzRoy, three pages, 8vo, Baths, n.d. ('Tuesday morning'), to Lieutenant Colonel Smith. FitzRoy informs his correspondent, in full, 'The day being so fine, will you honor the Beagle by your company (with your daughters if they will also honor us) at two o'clock - to eat a mutton chop & see the little vessel? A boat shall be at the Bathing Machines in Mill Bay at 1.30 pm. Mr. & Mrs. Harris will I hope honor us by their company & if so, will embark at the same place.' With remnants of a red wax seal to the verso. One small portion of page missing to the integral leaf, evidently caused when opening the letter and breaking the wax seal, very slightly affecting the signature. With very slight traces of former mounting to the right edge of the verso, dust staining and age wear. G A pencil annotation in an unidentified hand indicates that FitzRoy refers to William Harris (1791-1867) English Physician and Electrical Researcher, noted for his invention of a successful system of lightning conductors for ships. One of the successful test vessels was HMS Beagle which survived lightning strikes unharmed on her famous voyage with Charles Darwin.
