Henry Keppel was a 19th-century officer in the Royal Navy who is best remembered for his involvement in the First Opium War where he fought against Borneo pirates. While on the HMS Dido in the East Indies, Keppel and his crew encountered the White Rajahs of the Kingdom of Sarawak en route to Borneo. The contents of Keppel’s journal were published in ‘The Expedition to Borneo’ in 1846, much of which concerns military operations against the pirates, geography of Borneo, and first-hand observations of aboriginal tribal people.
