Description
FIRST EDITION. In Two Volumes. "A Narrative of The Expedition sent by Her Majesty's Government to the River Niger, in 1841. Under the Command of Captain H. D. Trotter, R.N." Full-leather with gilt lineal borders. Morocco gilt titles, gilt raised bands, gilt panel vignettes to spines. Marbled endpapers and page-blocks. Gift inscription on inside. Portrait frontispiece plate. Full-page plates and in-text illustrations. 2 fold-out maps. The British Niger Expedition of 1841 was commissioned by the government to explore the course of the River Niger and make trade treaties with the local rulers to prohibit the slave trade. However, the expedition was forced to end prematurely when most of the crew were struck down with fever. Despite this Commander Allen succeeded in signing three treaties with the most influential potentates on the river. A very lovely set.
