This 2 volume set is beautifully bound, and hand-signed by the author in the 1st volume. Yarrell's classic survey was first published 1835-6 with two supplementary parts added in 1839. The present edition is the 3rd edition, in which some supposed species are suppressed and new ones added, contains in all two hundred and sixty species, with cuts of the new ones, and many additional ornamental vignettes' (Introduction'). Includes memoir of the author and list of writings. It has an engraved portrait frontispiece and over 500 fine woodcuts in the text. The owner purchased this set from Boston's oldest Antiquarian book shop, Brattle Book Shop. The stack is 10.5 inches tall, 7 inches deep, and 4 inches wide. Good antique condition. The binging is in good shape, though there is some slight separation in the leather on the spine of Volume 2. Some yellowing and age spots to the pages within. Some handwriting in pencil on first page, see photos for reference.
