Description
VIRGINIA OR PENNSYLVANIA EARTHENWARE / REDWARE SEATED CAT FIGURE, lead- and manganese-glazed, punched ears and eyes, gouged eyebrows and nostrils, and incised mouth, on an oval base with stamped circles around edge and seven-petal flower in center. Possible makers include Solomon Bell and/or S. Bell & Son, Strasburg, Shenandoah Valley of VA, and John Bell, Waynesboro, PA. 1845-1880. 4 1/4" H, 3 3/8" x 2 1/8" base.
Excellent condition with no restoration, shallow chip to back of one ear and glaze flake to other, minute flake to mouth, base with two minor glaze flakes and a glaze skip, as made.
