Description

AN IMPORTANT RUSSIAN GOLD MOUNTED SNUFF BOX, JOHANN GEORG KRAUTZWEDEL, ST. PETERSBURG, 1779-1792. The oval box inlaid with 60 polished iridescent labradorite panels mounted within narrow gold bands. The hinged lid consisting of trapezoidal thin plaques within gold mounts radiating from a central oval panel with beveled edge within a gold ribbon-tied acanthus wreath chased frame, the sides inlaid with rectangular and square plaques within a gold framework and the sides and base with gold banding chased with bell flowers. The underside of base comprising a single oval polished labradorite plaque. The interior in high polish, hallmarked St. Petersburg, circa 1780 (Cyrillic assayer initials ?.?) with Latin maker's mark IGK and with 72 gold standard (18kt). Width 2.9 inches (7.3 cm).

Comparison: See Christies London auction of November 29, 2011, lot #375 where a similar box, albeit by the Dresden Jeweler Johann-Christian Neuber (1736-1808) was sold for $508,044.00
