Item Details
Description
35-Star Company K Silk Cavalry Guidon. 35" x 27" silk swallow-tail guidon with 35 gold-painted stars in the Great Medallion pattern with an additional star in each corner. The center of the star has an unusual feature; namely, a large letter "K" embroidered in yellow thread. The guidon was passed down through the family of the consignor and is believed to have been owned by the only member of the family who served in the Civil War. That person was Frederick Loeffler who enlisted at age 38 in Company A, 52nd Regiment, New York State Volunteer Infantry (the "German Rangers"), a regiment composed almost exclusively of German-Americans. He mustered in on August 24, 1861 and mustered out on August 2, 1864 as a private. He was wounded in action at Fair Oaks on June 1, 1862. This regiment saw action at nearly all the major battles of the war. During Loeffler's term of service, they fought at Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, The Wilderness, Spotsylvania Court House and Cold Harbor. Although we can't say for sure where Loeffler acquired this souvenir, it likely saw use at one of these engagements, possibly even Gettysburg, where many New York State cavalry regiments participated. Like most silk flags of the period, it is rather delicate and should be mounted to a support fabric and properly framed. There are scattered small holes and one larger hole in the upper right corner. There is some offsetting of the blue dye, as shown, and light fraying at two points along the right. There is some separation of the fabric in the canton, along the top. There are also scattered blood stains. The colors are strong. All in all, it remains in good overall condition... a rare survivor with a colorful history.
