Description

[CIVIL WAR]. Captain of cavalry shoulder straps, Captain Thomas C. Miller, Company F, 7th Missouri Cavalry Regiment.

Approx. 4 1/2 x 1 3/4 in. captain of cavalry straps (bullion darkened, few holes to centers, missing backing). Straps feature extra rich double bullion borders and rank devices and yellow worsted wool centers. Accompanied by original box with ink inscription on lid reading, "Shoulder Straps worn by Capt T.C. Miller during civil war."

Captain Thomas C. Miller of Company F, 7th Missouri Cavalry was born in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, on 1 July 1827. He is mentioned in Joanne Chiles Eakins' "Union Military Post Returns" (1995) pages 58-59 and 67-68. The reference describes his command capturing several southerners. He later developed typhoid fever and was forced to resign but in 1864 joined Co. K of the 146th Illinois infantry as a lieutenant.
