Item Details
Description
Ancient Rome, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. A fine wheel made greyware pyxis that departs from the more common drum-like form with its cylindrical body leading to a corseted shoulder, a ridged short tubular neck, a wide mouth, and trifurcated, raised strap handles joining upper to lower ends of the shoulders - all on a flat base with an angled ankle if you will. The walls are adorned with floral appliques flanking relief visages of a goddess, perhaps Minerva or Venus, wearing a lovely diadem. A pyxis was a vessel created in the Classical World, for the most part used by women to hold jewelry, trinkets, or cosmetics. A rather unusual example. Size: 6.125" in diameter x 5.625" H (15.6 cm x 14.3 cm)

Provenance: private New Jersey USA collection, acquired over twenty years ago
