Catalogue Note: George Wesley Bellows (1882-1925) was one of the most important American artists of the early 20th century. A student of Robert Henri (1865-1929), Bellows is often identified with "The Eight", an avant-garde group of artists in New York City that was actively involved in some of the most significant cultural events of the period, including the 1913 Armory Show. In 1925, at the height of his artistic powers, Bellows died suddenly from appendicitis.
The present lithograph, from an edition of approximately 100, was originally produced as a place card for the 1923 annual dinner of the New Society of American Artists, an organization Bellows helped to establish in 1919 in opposition to the increasingly reactionary temperament of the already well-established National Academy.
