Description
For your consideration is the Rare Vintage First Edition of "Catlin's Indian Gallery", 1965, published by R. R. Donnelley & Sons Company, New York. Describes the Smithsonian Institution's 1961 exhibit of 27 George Catlin paintings and the four prints contained here: "Keokuk, the Watchful Fox," "Tah-teck-a-da-hair, the Steep Wind," "Mah-to-to-pa, the Four Bears" and "Stu-mick-o-sucks, the Buffalo Bull's Back Fat." In a slot opposite is Marjorie Halpin's exhibit booklet, "Catlin's Indian Gallery: The George Catlin Paintings in the United States National Museum" Washington, D.C., The Smithsonian Institution, 1965. George Catlin (1796-1872)was an American lawyer, painter, author, and traveler, who is best remembered for specializing in portraits of Native Americans of the American frontier. Traveling to the American West five times during the 1830s, Catlin wrote about and painted 470 portraits and portraits that depicted the life of the Plains Indians representing almost forty different tribes. The portfolio includes the four original prints, the original booklet, "Catlin's Indian Gallery The George Catlin Paintings in the United States National Museum" by Marjorie Halpin, Docent in Anthropology The Smithsonian Museum Service, published by The Smithsonian Institution, 1965. Also included are one duplicate each of the four prints, as well as these eight additional prints from the exhibit: "Meach-o-shin-gaw, The Little White Bear" Kansas Brave, "Clermont" Osage First Chief, "Osceola, The Black Drink" Seminole Warrior, "Shon-ka-ki-he-ga, The Horse Chief" Grand Pawnee Head Chief, "Mah-to-he-ha The Old Bear" Mandan Medicine Man, "Sha-ko-ka, The Mint" Mandan Girl, "His-oo-san-chees, The Little Spaniard" Comanche Warrior, and "Ru-ton-ye-wee-ma, The Strutting Pigeon" Iowa Woman and Child. Each print is in very nice condition, no marring observed. Both the booklet and the tan coloured softcover portfolio are in nice condition, slight tear to inside pocket. Prints each measure 11"W x 14"L, booklet is 7.75"W x 10"L, and the folder is 11.25"W x 14.5"L.
