Australia 1948, original 8 1/2 by 6 1/5in. Wilkes & Son black-and-white archival print, Wilkes & Son copyright stamp. The Australian team at the start of their 1948 tour of England, a summer that was to earn them the title ''Invincibles'' after becoming the first Test match side to return home unbeaten. This opening fixture against Worcestershire started on April 28th at the County Ground. The home side won the toss and reached 137/1, but collapsed and were beaten by an innings & 17 runs, after centuries by skipper Don Bradman (on his fourth and final tour) and Arthur Morris. appendix Wilkes & Sons Sporting Photographs Albert Wilkes set up his sporting photography business in the late 1890s while still a footballer with Aston Villa, having previously played for West Bromwich Albion and Walsall. Wilkes played for Villa from 1897-1907 and won five caps for England. Albert Junior joined the business during the 1st World War and took over when his father died suddenly in 1936. Albert sold the Wilkes & Son collection, mainly glass plates, to Colorsport at the start of the seventies.
