Description
Pre-Columbian, central Ecuador, Puruha, ca. 850 to 1500 CE. A bichrome pottery vessel, beautifully decorated with red-on-black negative resist geometric patterns, depicting a transforming bird/shaman figure, the form comprised of a bulbous body with a bird head, applied coffee-bean shaped eyes, double loops adorned with rings on each side, an upturned beak/nose and protruding mouth. Pieces so highly ornamented such as this were likely uses as offering vessels in ceremonial rituals. Size: 5.5" L x 7" W x 10.75" H (14 cm x 17.8 cm x 27.3 cm)

Condition
Expected surface wear with minor pigment losses and abrasions as shown. Lower section and base show most surface wear as it probably sat in the earth. Nice manganese deposits.
