Union Major General Sheridan Permit for Ex-Confederate General Simon B. Buckner To Travel
MAJOR GENERAL PHILIP H. SHERIDAN (1831-1888). United States Army Officer and a Union Major General in the American Civil War who was instrumental in forcing Confederate General Lee to surrender at Appomattox.
Lot of Two (2) Civil War Era Documents, both Documents are professionally matted and framed under Plexiglas for display.
1. December 28th, 1865-Dated, American Civil War Era, Manuscript Material: Partially-Printed Document Signed, “P(hilip) H. Sheridan, Major General Commanding,” Fine. This original document is from New Orleans, 1 page, 9.5” x 7.5” (sight) on Headquarters, Military Division of The Gulf letterhead; light creases along folds. Pass permitting ex-Confederate General Simon B. Buckner to travel to St. Louis and then back to New Orleans. Sheridan’s brown signature is huge, measuring a massive 4” long!
2. July 2, 1862-Dated Civil War Period, Manuscript Document, being a Receipt for medical supplies delivered to Camp Garrison’s Landing, Virginia, Choice Extremely Fine. This bold 12” x 8” Document is beautifully Handwritten on period light blue lined paper.
Both Documents are nicely matted and framed under glass measuring 21.5” x 18” and 19” x 14.5” respectively, housed within decorative mahogany color wood frames with slight wear and are ready for display. (2 items)
Philip Henry Sheridan (1831 – 1888) was a career United States Army officer and a Union Major General in the American Civil War. His career was noted for his rapid rise to major general and his close association with Lt. General Ulysses S. Grant, who transferred Sheridan from command of an infantry division in the Western Theater to lead the Cavalry Corps of the Army of the Potomac in the East.
In 1864, he defeated Confederate forces in the Shenandoah Valley and his destruction of the economic infrastructure of the Valley, called "The Burning" by residents, was one of the first uses of scorched earth tactics in the war. I n 1865, his cavalry pursued Gen. Robert E. Lee and was instrumental in forcing his surrender at Appomattox.
Sheridan prosecuted the later years of the Indian Wars of the Great Plains. Both as a soldier and private citizen, he was instrumental in the development and protection of Yellowstone National Park. In 1883 Sheridan was appointed general-in-chief of the U.S. Army, and in 1888 he was promoted to the rank of General of the Army during the term of President Grover Cleveland.
