Description
Central Africa, Cameroon, Bamileke or Bamun, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A bronze trumpet or horn, cast via the lost wax (cire perdue) method, with a plaited natural fiber strap threaded through two integral bronze loops. The horn features a seated figure playing a similar instrument -depicted in the round at the upper end atop the horn, which is further adorned with an upper register featuring a dotted zigzag bordered by a striated band above and a beaded band below. Zigzag patterns were favored motifs for carved ivory trumpet/horn pieces as well. The wider register at the base of the horn features low-relief flowers and spiral motifs upon an incised diamond-pattern, bordered by a plaited lower band and a striated upper band. Custom stand. Condition
Wear to braided textile strap shows that it was probably used traditionally. Bronze shows nice green and russet patina.
