Description
Pre-Columbian, North Coast of Peru, Viru, ca. 300 BCE to 100 CE. A polychrome terracotta whistling vessel in the form of a bird with a long tapered spout emerging from its tail end, food or pebbles in its beak, and an arched bridge handle connecting the spout to the bird's head. Typical of Viru wares, the modeling is pleasantly simple yet very descriptive. Notice how the wings are raised and painted with striations for feathers, how its legs and webbed feet are also nicely delineated, not to mention that wide-eyed visage - so full of personality. The surface is adorned in a negative resist finish of red, beige, and black. The Viru culture, which emerged on the north coast of Peru at the close of the Chavin period, was later displaced by the Moche Culture in the Chicama and Moche River valleys. This said, Viru ceramics have been found at Vicus further north as well. A wonderful avian effigy whistling jar from this ancient culture of the Americas. Size: 7.625" L x 4.625" W x 6.625" H (19.4 cm x 11.7 cm x 16.8 cm)

Small chips to tail. Expected surface wear with faint losses to pigment, worn areas around the eyes, and tiny nicks here and there. Overall very good and whistles nicely.
