Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Nazca, ca. 100 to 300 CE. A hand-built pottery jar of a round-bottomed form with a flared rim and a globular body. The highly burnished exterior displays a register of highly stylized avian creatures circling around to the left along with one sizable crustacean chasing one of the birds, perhaps a lobster, all atop a burgundy ground. The rim interior is decorated with a repeating register of vertical black stripes, and the vessel's unadorned base exhibits its natural light orange color. Size: 7.2" Diameter x 5.2" H (18.3 cm x 13.2 cm)

Provenance: ex-Drimmer collection, Florida, USA, before 1965
