Description
Magna Graecia, South Italy, Apulia, probably Daunian, ca. mid to late 4th century BCE. A large polychrome pottery askos, of a globular - near spherical - body so evenly constructed that it rests upright on a relatively small area of the smooth underside. The form presents a single cylindrical spout resolving in a flared rim with a wide strap handle. The upper portion is decorated with linear, leaf, and undulating vine tendril motifs in chocolate brown and caramel brown hues on a cream ground. Size: 13.875" W x 11.875" H (35.2 cm x 30.2 cm)
The term askos was originally used to describe an animal skin bag used to carry liquids such as wine or water. South Italic forms like this example were intended as funerary objects. Such vessels were created exclusively for the indigenous peoples residing in the northern regions of modern day Apulia (Daunia was located north of Bari). According to most scholars, their relationship with the Greeks colonists, who generally settled in coastal cities of the Adriatic, was one of conflict. Stylistically, Daunian pottery forged its own path and was resilient to influences of the contemporary Italiote style (painted via the red-figure technique), which was favored by those of Greek origin.
