Description
"Le Catafalque de l'Empereur Mathias" by Jacques Callot, French Lorrainese (1592-1635). Copper engraving. Image depicts funeral for Matthias, Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. Large group of people are gathered in a great hall adorned with skeletons on the columns and along the walls. "Essequie celebrate in fiorenza dal ser. gran duca per la morte dell imperator mattias," with the Roman numerals "M.C.X. I. X," denoting the date of the Emperor's death in 1619. "Iacomo Callot, Fe" is printed below image with the signature "Jacoma Callot, Fe." Printed below image on mount is "Le Catafalque de l'Empereur Mathias, Lieure 299." En verso the word "Plan 255" is written lightly in pencil.
Callot was a baroque printmaker and draftsman from Lorraine, now in France, important in the development of the old master print. He became an artist at the Medici Court in Florence under the Grand Duke Cosimo II and became especially known for his ability to represent vast scenes without sacrificing detail. Callot completed more than 1,200 works in his lifetime, and Rembrandt was known to have collected his pieces.

Bold, clear impression with fine detail. Overall very nice condition with only minor signs of toning and aging. Paper measures approximately 11" x 8.5" and is mounted in an acid-free window mount measuring approximately 14" x 20".
