Joseph Trumbull (1737-1778) Commissary General Continental Army. Trumbull, son of Connecticut Governor Jonathan Trumbull, was the first commissary general of the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. After Lexington and Concord in April 1775, the Connecticut Assembly appointed Trumbull as commissary general in charge of supplying food for the Connecticut troops who had joined the siege of Boston. At Boston, General George Washington was impressed with Trumbull's efforts, and recommended him for the same job in the newly created Continental Army. In 1775, Congress appointed Trumbull as Commissary General of Stores and Provisions.. 8” x 12 ¼” autograph letter signed, North Castle, December 4, 1776, to Major General David Wooster. “…Above is Copy of an Order of Congress, lately sent me by Genl Washington…I must request you to give orders to the troops under your Command, to be very particular, in their Provision Returns….” The letter is written under a transcription, in Trumbull’s hand, of the order given by Washington to Congress on November 19, 1776. “Resolved – That the Commissary General…make regular weekly Returns of all Rations…of any Regiment, Troop or Company in the Service of the States, to the Adjutant General…transmitted to Congress Monthly.” David Wooster (1711 - 1777) was an American general who served in the French and Indian War and in the American Revolutionary War. He died of wounds sustained during the Battle of Ridgefield. Age-toned, normal folds, two small stains in the right margin.
