British silk on wool sampler, dated 1769, signed Hannah Gurney, having a scripted proverb in red thread reading "When Flowers as Emblems we survey/A Moral they difclofe/In Youth they bloom in Age decay/Then imitate the Rofe", above an embroidered panel depicting a verdant garden, 13.5"h x 7.5"w, Property of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Sold to Benefit the Acquisitions Fund.
