Needlework Silk on Linen Sampler Signed & Dated "Eliza R. Hilton aged 13, 1812" and Later of Historic Bartlett, NH.
1812-Dated War of 1812 Period, Identified Hand-made Needlework Sampler, Silk on Linen, Maine, Very Fine.
This nice Sampler measures about 9.25" x 10" made of stitched green, blue, silver and rose in silk thread on tan cotton linen with a decorative outer border. It has seven lines of alphabet and numbers, then Signed and Dated: "Eliza R. Hilton aged 13, 1812," over three lines of verse. Note: Genealogical sources document an Eliza Hilton who was born in Maine in 1799, later married to Thomas Hanson (1787-1872) in 1843, and then having died in 1872 in Bartlett, New Hampshire.
The town of Bartlett, NH is named for Josiah Bartlett. Dr. Josiah Bartlett of Kingston, the first Chief Executive to bear the name Governor, and was a representative to the Continental Congress, and one of Three Signers of the Declaration of Independence from New Hampshire. Dr. Bartlett was second to Sign the Declaration, placing his signature along with the well-known signature of John Hancock. About the time of his signature in 1776 his home was burned to the ground by British loyalists.
