School Girl, Alice Hadfield.
Original early nineteenth century English Sampler, embroidered by 15 year old school girl Alice Hadfield, 1817.
Large silk embroidered on linen pictorial sampler features Bromley College in Kent with various vignettes: men on horses, boat with passengers, goat herder and dogs with grazing billy goats, goat in a pen with a bird perched on its back; the large tree has a serpent entwined in its branches.
Sampler is also filled with a balanced arrangement of flowers, detached and flowering trees, dogs, fruit basket, crowns-cherub-crescent moon, birds, rabbits, diamonds-hearts with 2 lions-2 crowns framed within a repeating floral border.
Verse Reads: TO GATHER LET OUS SWEETLY LIVE AND HAPPY LET US DIE.
A memorandum to her parents marriage, names and birth dates of herself and 8 siblings.
Signed Alice Hadfield her work, 1817.
Housed in original Rosewood frame under glass.
Dimensions: framed: W: 27 3/4 in., L: 34 1/4 in., Sampler: W: 20 1/2 in., L: 27 in.
Condition: good overall original framed estate condition, great detailed images, no holes or repairs, scattered discoloration of linen commensurate with age, crack noted on glass (lower right).
