1858 ABRAHAM LINCOLN Photograph by William Thompson During the Historic “Lincoln-Douglas” Debates
1858 ABRAHAM LINCOLN Cabinet Card Photograph by William Thompson, Copy Image from the Original ‘Unique Ambrotype’ taken during the historic “Lincoln-Douglas” Debate period, housed within its Original “Galesburg, Illinois” Imprint Mount, Choice Very Fine.
Extremely rare Cabinet Card Photograph, measuring 6" x 8" on its original issue light gray mount, being a Post-Assassination period copy from the remarkable, unique existing original Ambrotype photograph which was taken at Monmouth, Illinois on October 11, 1858 by photographer William Thompson of candidate ABRAHAM LINCOLN. That extraordinary image was taken shortly after the 5th historic “Lincoln-Douglas” Debate, and before the 6th “Lincoln-Douglas” Debate was held with Lincoln’s candidate rival Stephen A. Douglas. The 5th debate was held in Galesburg, Illinois just a few days earlier than the 6th. This early silver print Cabinet Photograph is on its original light gray mount of issue, has the imprint name of the “Harrison Photo Studio, Galesburg, Illinois.” This amazing image was issued as a tribute to the beloved fallen President. The Lincoln–Douglas Debates of 1858 (also known as The Great Debates of 1858) were a series of seven debates between Abraham Lincoln, the Republican candidate for the United States Senate from Illinois, and incumbent Senator Stephen Douglas, the Democratic Party candidate. The 7th and final debate between candidates Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas was held on October 15, 1858, in Alton, Illinois. A similar rare Abraham Lincoln copy image Cabinet Card O-11 taken by William Judkins Thomson in Monmouth, Illinois on October 11, 1858 unmounted, later matted being a high quality early 20th century copy image later framed, from the collection of Dr. Michael Krane, sold at public auction by a Midwest firm in September 2016 for $2,750. Any collector of Abraham Lincoln should jump at this opportunity to acquire such a well known and historically important, truly early example of this rare image.
